Prequel Speculation
Here is where I pile my interesting/absurd/crazy rumours about the coming prequels. So if you're not into spoilers, get lost! If you are into having fun with the storyline of the greatest Saga of our time, then stick around! Since there have been rumours abound on the web since the week of Episode I's release, it's easy to get confused. I hope to put together a nice, well rounded and reasonable collection of Episode II and III plot points that I believe may occur. Have fun, and feel free to send any of your ideas to me.
Episode II
Last Updated: July 3, 1999
- This is probably the movie where the Clone Wars take place. Since we only have the briefest mention of this event from Princess Leia's message to Obi-Wan, it is hard to know what to expect. Some people have said the Jedi Knights stage a huge battle against a cloned army of Mandalorian warriors. I don't think so. I think that the battle is fought over cloning technology, which we have seen nothing of...yet. It could be that Chancellor Palpatine is once again responsible for working behind the scenes to get the Jedi to win (or save, possibly) the technology to be used for his own purposes. We also know that Obi-Wan will be a great hero of this battle along with Bail Organa. Other specifics are relatively unknown about who else would fight in this battle, but we can assume that Anakin and possibly members of the Jedi council will make appearances.
- This one is a stretch, but I've heard from many sources that Mace Windu will betray the Jedi Council and help decimate the Jedi ranks. This is a longshot, in my opinion, but I feel it's worth mentioning here because anything is possible. However, this is too early for the eradication of the Jedi. That would most likely occur in Episode III, when the Emperor has Anakin on his side.
- I've read in some places that we may get to see the Kuat Drive Yards in this film, which we know from the expanded universe is where Star Destroyers were created. This does not necessarily mean that the Empire comes to power, however, this is just the beginning stages. Once again, it could be that Chancellor Palpatine, with his new found power and wealth, decides to build ships to "defend" the Republic. Perhaps this is true for this film, the ships may even be used in the Clone Wars space battle (if any). The only problem I have with this is that its another expanded universe location. Coruscant was never mentioned in any of the original three films, yet it became a major location for Episode I (and even briefly seen in the end sequence of ROTJ). Lucas did have the idea of a citywide planet/Imperial Centre, and mentioned it in several "making of" books and interviews - Tim Zahn merely gave it a name. I would still rather see Lucas come up with something entirely new, like he did with Naboo.
- It's already been confirmed that Episode II will be a love story. And we know that Anakin and Amidala are supposed to get married eventually. So maybe there will be a twist here. Perhaps Anakin and Obi-Wan end up fighting over Amidala? This squabbling may start the division between the two friends. Once again, I believe this is too early for something like this. We know from Luke's discussion with Obi-Wan that Anakin was a good friend. I know that Episode II takes place ten years after TPM, but wouldn't a battle like the Clone Wars bring them closer together? They most definitely fight in Episode III, which is where Anakin becomes Vader and dons that mechanical suit. It is more reasonable to assume that Anakin and Obi-Wan drift apart in Episode III, when Anakin starts showing signs of the Dark Side.
- Boba Fett will most definitely show up in Episode II. It's been confirmed (indirectly) by both Lucas and Rick McCallum. First, let me say that I think Boba Fett is a cool character, and it would be nice to learn a bit of his background. But unfortunately, a lot of people are focussing too much on this. The story is about Anakin's fall, not some Bounty Hunter that has a total of 5 lines, give or take a girly scream. I think that Boba Fett will NOT be some guy who is exiled from his home planet, but instead he will be a general or someone ranking very high in the Mandalorian army. We will get to see his exploits in the battle against the Jedi. Maybe the Mandalorians are eradicated instead of the Jedi (with some loss, of course, to the Jedi ranks) and Boba Fett must go into hiding until things quiet down. Fett then re-emerges as a Bounty Hunter, using his warrior skills to track down his bounties. That would explain why he has the armour, and why he is such a feared adversary.
- Here's some nonsense that's been circulating for awhile: Darth Maul will return. How does this work, you ask? Well it appears some people are taking the fact that Ray Park and GL have (allegedly) met already. It's possible that Mr. Park will probably be returning as a stunt man (he is what he is), but some people are taking it too far. Reasons for the return? The Maul we saw in TPM is one of many clones (in fact, some people even say there was more than one Maul in TPM...see Episode-X for details). Or, that Maul will return with a cybernetic lower body...a bit of a stretch, wouldn't you say? I think people have to get over the fact that the better Jedi won, and Darth Maul is DEAD FOR GOOD.
- Now this item pertains to the Trilogy as a whole, but its too wacky to be mentioned anywhere else. Some people have been saying that the entire entourage of main characters are clones (well, the Jedi anyway...but what the hell, lets pretend Han Solo and Chewie are clones too). That's why Obi-Wan adopted the name Ben...not to be confused with his "original" self. You see, all the "originals" were killed in the Clone Wars and the clones lived on...yep, that's right, Yoda's clone taught Luke the ways of the Force. This theory was applied to the Jedi Disappearing Trick as well, explaining that only the clones of Jedi disappear. So this means that Anakin Skywalker was an original...damn this is confusing. See what happens when one line in a movie made 22 years ago can be misinterpreted?
- Apparently we will get to see C-3PO again in Episode II, except he has his entire upper body with gold plating. This is all fine and good, but how in the world could that happen? Did Shmi do it? Or did Anakin go back to Tatooine? I doubt the second point, since he would be occupied with his Jedi training. Also, wouldn't it be more effective a plot device if Anakin had not been back to his home planet for 10 years? I guess we will see.
- Back to Boba Fett - check out this wacky theory. Apparently, it is speculated that Kitster, Anakin's best pal, will don the armour and become the galaxy's most feared bounty hunter. Reason? It seems Vader and Boba Fett are more than business partners (as seen in ESB), instead they may have something on the personal level. Perhaps Kitster helps his buddy out once he's turned to evil. Something to think about, I guess, but personally I'm sticking to the Mandalorian general theory.
